Ghazal 278
I want a bitter wine whose strength can throw a man,
so that for one moment I may rest from the world and its evil and its uproar.
The table of this age that rears the base holds no honey of ease;
O heart, wash the taste of greed and craving clean of its bitter and its salt.
Bring wine, for one cannot be safe from the cunning of the sky,
from the games of its Venus with the harp and its Mars with the sword.
Throw away Bahram's hunting lasso and take up the cup of Jamshid,
for I have crossed this desert, and there is neither Bahram nor his wild ass.
Come, and I will show you the secret of time in clear wine,
on condition that you do not show it to the crooked of nature and blind of heart.
To look upon the dervishes does not go against greatness;
Solomon, with all his majesty, had regard for the ant.
The bow of the beloved's eyebrow does not turn away from Hafez,
but it laughs at this arm of his that has no strength.
You are tired of the world's uproar and want a short rest. Wash greed and craving out of your heart, for this age gives no one ease, and the power and glory of those who came before have not lasted either. Instead of hunting rank and wealth, look for insight. If you have the means, pay attention to those beneath you. Accept your own weakness and go forward with humility.
