Ghazal 279
How pleasant is Shiraz, and its matchless setting!
O Lord, preserve it from decline.
For our Ruknabad, a hundred times "God keep it",
for its clear water gives the life of Khizr.
Between Jafarabad and Mosalla
its north wind comes mingled with perfume.
Come to Shiraz, and ask for the bounty of the Holy Spirit
from its people, who are accomplished in every grace.
Who ever mentioned the sugar of Egypt there
without the sweet ones putting it to shame?
East wind, of that merry, drunken gypsy
what news do you have? How is he?
If that sweet boy should shed my blood,
O heart, make it as lawful to him as mother's milk.
Do not wake me from sleep, for God's sake,
for I am keeping pleasant company with his image.
Why, Hafez, since you were afraid of separation,
did you not give thanks for the days of union?
The place where you are, or your home town, has much that is good and many fine people: value it, and look for what you want right there. Your heart is with someone you have no news of: ask how they are. The chief lesson of this fal is to be grateful for happiness and closeness while you have them, instead of regretting them once they are gone.
