Ghazal 280
When the east wind ruffled his amber-scattering tress,
every broken one it touched had his soul made new.
Where is a companion, that I may set out in full
what the heart endures from the days of separation from him?
Time made a likeness of your face out of the petals of the rose,
but out of shame before you it hid it away in the bud.
You are asleep, and no shore of love has come into view;
blessed be God, what a road this is that has no end!
Will the beauty of the Kaaba perhaps make amends to the travellers?
For the souls of those with living hearts were burnt in its desert.
To this broken one in the house of sorrow, who will bring
a sign of the Joseph of the heart from the pit of his chin?
I will take hold of the tip of that tress and put it in the master's hand,
for heart-lost Hafez has been burnt by its wiles and tricks.
A small sign from the one you love revives you, but you have no companion to whom you can tell the pain of distance. The road you have set out on has no visible end and is full of hardship; even so, the beauty of the destination makes up for those sufferings. News of them will arrive. If their behaviour has hurt you, take your complaint to someone who is in a position to judge.
