Ghazal 281
O Lord, this smiling new rose that you entrusted to me,
I entrust to you, from the envious eye of the meadow.
Though he has gone a hundred stages away from the street of faithfulness,
may the harm of the turning sky be far from his soul and body.
If you reach the dwelling of Salma, O east wind,
I hope that you will carry a greeting to her from me.
With courtesy open the musk-pod of that black tress;
it is the home of precious hearts: do not disturb it.
Say: "My heart has a claim of faithfulness on your down and your mole;
hold it in honour within that amber-scented curl."
In a place where they drink wine to the memory of his lip,
base is the drunkard who still has any knowledge of himself.
Honour and wealth are not to be gathered at the door of the tavern;
whoever drinks this water, throw his belongings into the sea.
For whoever fears weariness, the sorrow of love is not lawful;
it is our head and his foot, or else our lip and his mouth.
The poetry of Hafez is, all of it, the finest couplet of knowledge;
praise be on his heart-drawing breath and the grace of his speech.
Someone dear who was entrusted to you is far away; commend them to God and pray for their good, even if they have fallen short in loyalty. Send them your message of affection with courtesy. On the road you have chosen, one cannot both keep reputation and wealth and give one's heart away; if you are afraid of hardship, this road is not for you.
