Ghazal 284

Last night a voice from the corner of the tavern
said: "Sin is forgiven; drink wine."

Divine kindness does its own work;
the angel brings the good news of mercy.

Take this raw reason to the tavern,
so that ruby wine may bring its blood to the boil.

Though union with him is not granted for effort,
strive, O heart, as much as you are able.

The kindness of God is greater than our offence;
what do you know of the sealed mystery? Be silent.

My ear and the ring of the friend's tress;
my face and the dust at the wine seller's door.

The rend ways of Hafez are no grievous sin
before the generosity of the king who covers faults.

The judge of the faith, Shah Shuja, he who has made
the Holy Spirit wear the ring of his command in its ear:

O King of the Throne, grant him his desire,
and guard him from the danger of the evil eye.

This is a hopeful fal: your faults will be forgiven, and God's mercy is greater than your sin. Set dry, calculating reason aside and give your heart to love. Although reaching the goal does not depend on effort alone, do not stop trying. Do not pass judgement on what you do not know. A generous person will cover your faults.
