Ghazal 285

In the reign of the king who forgives faults and covers offences,
Hafez has become a carrier of the flagon and the mufti a drinker from the cup.

The Sufi came out of the corner of the cloister and sat at the foot of the jar
once he saw the censor carrying the wine pitcher on his shoulder.

About the state of the shaykh and the judge, and their drinking in secret,
I asked the old wine seller at dawn.

He said: "It is not a thing to be told, although you are a confidant;
hold your tongue, keep the veil in place, and drink wine."

Cupbearer, spring is arriving and there is no money left for wine;
think of something, for the heart's blood is boiling over with grief.

It is love and poverty, youth and the new spring;
accept my excuse, and cover the offence with the skirt of generosity.

How long will you go on being eloquent like the candle?
The moth of desire has arrived, O lover: be silent.

O king of form and of meaning, the like of whom
no eye has ever seen and no ear has ever heard,

May you remain so long that your young fortune receives
the blue patched cloak from the old, ragged sky.

You are living in a time when faults are forgiven and failings covered: make use of this opening. But do not reveal other people's secrets, and hold your tongue. Lack of means, youth and spring have all come together: do not be hard on yourself, and ask a generous person for pardon and help. What you wanted has arrived: say no more.
