Ghazal 286

Last night a sharp-witted man who knows how things work told me in private,
"and from you the secret of the wine seller should not be hidden":

He said: "Take things easily upon yourself, for it is in the nature of the world
to become hard on people who strive hard."

And then he handed me a cup from whose radiance, in the sky,
Venus began to dance, and playing her lute she kept saying: "Drink!"

With a bleeding heart bring a laughing lip, like the cup;
do not, if a blow reaches you, break out in clamour like the harp.

Until you become an intimate you will not hear one secret from behind this veil;
the ear of the stranger is no place for the message of the angel.

Listen to advice, my son, and do not grieve for the sake of the world;
I have told you a saying like a pearl, if you can keep it in mind.

In the sanctuary of love one cannot breathe a word of saying and hearing,
for there every limb must be eye and ear.

On the carpet of those who know subtleties, self-display is not the rule;
either speak with knowledge, wise man, or be silent.

Cupbearer, give wine, for the rend ways of Hafez have been understood
by the vizier, lord of the fortunate conjunction, who forgives offences and covers faults.

A friendly piece of advice has reached you: take things easily, for the world goes hard on those who are hard on themselves. Smile even when your heart is bleeding, and do not cry out at every blow. Until you have become familiar with those who know the secret, you will not hear the mysteries. Do not show off among the wise: either speak with care or stay silent.
