Ghazal 288: The water's edge, the foot of the willow, a mind for poetry and a pleasant friend
The water's edge, the foot of the willow, a mind for poetry and a pleasant friend;
for company a sweet stealer of hearts, and a pleasant rose-cheeked cupbearer.
O you of fortunate star, who know the worth of the moment,
may this pleasure do you good, for you are having a pleasant time.
Whoever carries in his mind a burden from the love of a beauty,
tell him to put wild rue on the fire, for his business is going pleasantly.
I am adorning the bride of my nature with jewels of fresh thought;
it may be that from the hand of time a pleasant beauty will fall into mine.
Count the night of company as a prize and take your full due of gladness,
for there is moonlight that warms the heart and a pleasant tulip field's edge.
There is a wine in the bowl of the cupbearer's eye, God's name upon it,
that makes the reason drunk and gives a pleasant languor.
Life has gone by in heedlessness, Hafez; come with us to the tavern,
so that the merry ones may teach you a pleasant trade.
Interpretation of the fal
You are having a good time and everything needed for joy is at hand: value this hour, and may you be safe from the evil eye. Treasure the evenings spent with friends. With fresh thinking and good work, draw good fortune towards you. Do not let more of your life go by in heedlessness, and learn how to live gladly.
