Ghazal 296
If my star gives its help, I will bring his skirt into my hand;
if I draw him to me, what joy! And if he kills me, what honour!
This hope-filled heart of mine has had no share of generosity from anyone,
though talk carries my story in every direction.
From the curve of your eyebrow no opening has ever come to me;
alas, that in this crooked fancy my precious life has been wasted.
When will the eyebrow of the friend ever be drawn by the hand of my fancy?
No one has hit the target of desire with an arrow from that bow.
How long shall I tenderly nurse my love for stony-hearted idols?
These undutiful sons do not remember their father.
Fancying myself an ascetic, I sit in a corner, and the strange thing is
that from every side a Magian youth assails me with harp and tambourine.
The ascetics are without knowledge: read the sign and say nothing.
The censor is drunk with hypocrisy: pour the wine and do not fear.
See the Sufi of the city, how he eats the doubtful morsel;
long may his crupper be, that well-fed animal!
Hafez, if you walk sincerely on the path of the Household,
the resolve of the Warden of Najaf will be the escort of your road.
If fortune helps, you will reach your goal, and either outcome brings you honour. So far no one has helped you, and you have spent a lifetime on a difficult fancy. Stop giving your heart to the unfaithful. Pay no attention to hypocrites and hoarders. If you walk sincerely in the way of the good, the spiritual power of the great will stand behind you.
