Ghazal 29
With the thought of you, what care have we for wine?
Tell the jar to look to itself, for the wine cellar is in ruins.
Though it be the wine of paradise, pour it away, for without the friend
every sweet drink you give me is torment itself.
Alas, the heart-stealer has gone, and in my weeping eye
the tracing of the image of her down is a picture on water.
Wake up, O eye, for one cannot be safe
from this unceasing flood in this lodging of sleep.
The beloved passes before you in plain sight, but
she sees strangers there, and so she has drawn her veil.
Since the rose saw the grace of sweat on your coloured cheek,
in the fire of longing, from grief of heart, it is drowned in rosewater.
Hill and plain are green; come, let us not let go
of the water's edge, for the whole world is a mirage.
Do not look for a place for advice in the corner of my brain,
for this corner is full of the murmur of harp and rebab.
What of it if Hafez is a lover, a rend, a gazer on beauty?
Many strange ways belong to the days of youth.
Away from the one you love, no pleasure reaches your heart. Wake up: what you are seeking is passing right in front of you, but you must clear your heart of distractions to see it. The world is a mirage, so value the good moments you have. Do not be ashamed of the passion of your youth.
