Ghazal 301

O you with whose lip my wounded heart has the claim of salt,
keep faith with that claim, for I am leaving: God be with you.

You are that pure jewel whose good remembrance, in the holy world,
is the whole fruit of the angels' praise.

If you have any doubt of my sincerity, put it to the test;
no one knows the assay of pure gold as the touchstone does.

You had said: "I will get drunk and give you two kisses."
The promise is long past its time, and we have seen neither two nor one.

Open that laughing pistachio and scatter sugar;
do not leave people in doubt about your mouth.

I will overturn the wheel if it turns against my desire;
I am not one to suffer abasement from the wheel of the sky.

Since you will not let him come near his own Hafez, at least,
O rival, move a step or two further from his side.

There is a bond of friendship and shared bread and salt between you and someone, and now the time of parting or travel has come: ask them to honour that bond. Your sincerity can be relied on, and testing will show it. A promise was made to you that has not yet been kept: remind them of it. Do not bow to adversity, and let those who get in the way step aside.
