Ghazal 307: Every fine point that I spoke in describing that figure

Every fine point that I spoke in describing that figure,
whoever heard it said: "God bless the one who said it!"

To acquire love and the way of the rend seemed easy at first;
in the end my soul was burnt in the gaining of these virtues.

Hallaj on the gallows sings this truth sweetly:
"Such questions as these are not to be put to the jurist."

I said: "When will you take pity on my feeble soul?"
He said: "At the time when the soul no longer stands between."

I have given my heart to a friend, playful, graceful, a beauty,
pleasing in every trait and praised for every quality.

I was living wholly withdrawn, like your drunken eye,
and now I lean towards the drunken, like your eyebrow.

A hundred times I have seen Noah's flood from the water of my eyes,
and your image has never been washed from the tablet of my breast.

O friend, the hand of Hafez is a charm against the evil eye;
O Lord, may I see it hung about your neck.

Interpretation of the fal

The road that looked easy has turned out to be hard and has asked a heavy price of you. Do not look for answers to questions like these from people of mere outward learning: they do not know them. As long as self stands in the way, you will not reach the goal. The one you gave your heart to was worthy, and through all the hardship that love has not left you. You long for closeness: keep hoping.
