Ghazal 30

Your tress bound a thousand hearts with a single hair;
it closed the road on a thousand healers from every side.

So that lovers would give their lives for the scent of its breeze,
it opened a musk pod and shut the door on desire.

I went mad because my beloved, like the new moon,
showed her eyebrow, displayed herself and hid her face.

The cupbearer poured wine of several colours into the cup;
see these pictures, how well he fixed them in the gourd.

Lord, what glance did the flask give, that the blood of the jar
caught in its throat with its gurgling cries?

What mode did the minstrel play, that within the music
he shut the door of clamour on the people of ecstasy?

Hafez, whoever did not practise love and yet wanted union
put on the pilgrim's robe for the Kaaba of the heart without ablution.

Your heart is firmly caught and you see no way out. What you want has shown itself and then hidden again, which has only sharpened your longing. Know that union is not reached without real love and preparation: first clear your heart and set your intention right, then take the step.
