Ghazal 315
Apart from the fact that faith and learning slipped from my hands,
come, tell me what profit I have had from love of you.
Although grief for you has given the harvest of my life to the wind,
by the dust of your dear feet, I did not break my pledge.
Though I am as small as a mote, see how, by the fortune of love,
in longing for your face I have joined the sun.
Bring wine, for it is a lifetime since I, in safety,
sat down in a quiet corner for the sake of pleasure.
If you are one of the sober, O giver of advice,
do not throw your words on the ground, for I am drunk.
How shall I lift my head before the friend, for shame,
when no service worthy of him has come from my hand?
Hafez has burnt, and that heart-soothing friend did not say:
"Let me send a salve, since I have wounded his mind."
You have given much to this attachment and received little, yet you have not broken your pledge, and that is to your honour. This very love has joined you, small as you are, to something great. Other people's advice has no effect on you at present. Do not be ashamed that you have done nothing worthy for that person, and do not expect to be comforted at once either.
