Ghazal 321: Though I have grown old, weary of heart and feeble
Though I have grown old, weary of heart and feeble,
whenever I remembered your face I became young again.
God be thanked that whatever I asked of God,
I attained it to the full extent of my aspiration.
O young rose bush, enjoy the fruit of your fortune, for in your shade
I have become the nightingale of the garden of the world.
At first I knew nothing of the low and the high of existence;
in the school of grief for you I became so versed in subtleties.
What is allotted to me keeps sending me to the tavern,
however much I became this and became that.
On that day the door of meaning was opened to my heart
when I became one of those who dwell at the court of the Magian elder.
On the highway of everlasting fortune, to the throne of good luck,
with the cup of wine I have gone as my friends' hearts desired.
From the time when the mischief of your eye reached me,
I have been safe from the evil of the mischief of the end of time.
I am not old in years and months: it is the friend who is faithless;
he passes me by as life does, and that is what has made me old.
Last night grace gave me the good news: "O Hafez,
come back, for I have stood surety for the pardon of your sin."
Interpretation of the fal
For all your weariness, the thought of the one you love makes you young and lively again. What you had asked of God has been granted, and you should give thanks. The pain of this love has made you wise and perceptive. If you feel old and worn, it is from lack of kindness, not from the passing of years. The good news of forgiveness has come: turn back and be at ease.
