Ghazal 324: Although a knot has fallen into my affairs from his tress

Although a knot has fallen into my affairs from his tress,
I still look for an opening from his generosity.

Do not put the redness of my face down to joy, for like the cup
the blood of my heart shows its reflection through my cheek.

The melody of the minstrel will carry me out of myself;
alas, if I am not admitted behind this veil!

All night long I have stood guard at the sanctuary of the heart,
so that I let nothing enter this veil but the thought of him.

I am that sorcerer of a poet who, by the spell of words,
rains nothing but candy and sugar from the reed of his pen.

The eye of my fortune has been lulled to sleep by his story;
where is a breeze of grace to wake me?

Since I am not able to see you on your way, O friend,
whom shall I ask to say a word for me to my friend?

Last night he was saying: "Hafez is all show and hypocrisy."
With whom do I have any dealings except the dust of his door?

Interpretation of the fal

A knot has formed in your affairs, yet you still hope for release and for that person's generosity, and the hope is well placed. Your calm appearance says nothing of the turmoil within. You have kept your heart for that person alone. Fortune is asleep at present and you need some favour. If you have been misjudged, know that your sincerity will become clear: find a go-between to carry your message.
