Ghazal 328
Who am I, that I should pass through that fragrant mind?
You show me kindnesses, O you the dust of whose door is the crown of my head.
O stealer of hearts, who taught you to cherish your servants? Tell me,
for I would never suspect those who guard you of it.
Make your blessing the escort of my road, O bird of holiness,
for the way to the goal is long, and I am new to travelling.
O breeze of dawn, carry my devoted service to him,
and say: "Do not forget me at the hour of the dawn prayer."
Happy the day when I pack up my load from this stage,
and my companions ask for news of me at the head of your street.
O Hafez, it is fitting if, in search of the pearl of union,
I make my eye a sea with tears and dive into it.
The rank of verse is high and it conquers the world; speak on,
so that the king of the sea may fill your mouth with pearls.
The one you love has been kind to you and has remembered you, more than you expected. You have a long road ahead and you are new to it: ask that person, and good people, for their prayers and blessing. You are ready to accept any hardship to reach your goal. Your skill and your words are valuable and will find a fitting reward.
