Ghazal 334

If my hand should reach your two tresses once again,
how many heads, like the ball, I would stake on your polo stick!

Your tress is long life to me, and yet there is not
a single hair's tip of that long life in my hand.

Grant me a warrant of ease, O candle, for tonight
from the fire of my heart I am melting before you like a candle.

At the moment when, like the flagon, I give up my life with one laugh,
I want those who are drunk with you to say my funeral prayer.

Since my prayer is not the prayer of one who is stained,
my burning and melting in the tavern are none the less for that.

If your image comes to me in mosque and in tavern,
I will make a prayer niche and a fiddle of your two eyebrows.

If one night you light up our solitude with your face,
like the morning I will raise my head over the horizons of the world.

The end of the affair on this road will be worthy of praise
if my head is lost in passion for my Ayaz.

Hafez, to whom shall I tell the grief of my heart? For in these times
nothing but the cup is fit to be the confidant of my secret.

You are ready to stake everything on that person, yet you still hold nothing of them in your hand. Ask them to give you a little ease, for you are burning in the fire of your heart. Wherever you are, you think of them. One night of meeting would raise your head high and fill you with light. The end of this road is good. But in these times you will find no one to trust with your secret: stay silent.
