Ghazal 336: Where is the good news of union with you, that I may rise up out of life itself?
Where is the good news of union with you, that I may rise up out of life itself?
I am a bird of holiness, and I will rise up out of the snare of the world.
By my devotion to you, if you call me your slave,
I will rise above the lordship of all that exists.
O Lord, send down a rain from the cloud of guidance,
before I rise up like dust and am gone.
Sit at the head of my grave with wine and with a minstrel,
so that at your scent I may rise up dancing from the tomb.
Rise and show your stature, O idol of sweet movements,
so that I may rise up, waving my hands, out of life and the world.
Though I am old, hold me tight in your arms for one night,
so that at dawn I may rise up from your side young.
On the day of my death grant me a moment's respite to see you,
so that, like Hafez, I may rise up out of life and the world.
Interpretation of the fal
This is one of the loftiest of Hafez's ghazals: your heart is restless for a union greater than this world, and for its sake you would give up everything. One sign, one piece of good news, would free you from your bonds. Ask God for guidance before the chance passes. Love takes away age and weariness and gives new life. Keep the hope of meeting alive.
