Ghazal 338

I am a lover of a fair face and of hair that draws the heart;
I am made senseless by the drunken eye and by clear, unmixed wine.

You said: "Tell one word of the secret of the eternal covenant."
I will tell you when I have drained two measures.

I am an Adam of paradise, but on this journey
I am for the present a captive of love for youths fair as the moon.

In love there is no escaping the making do and the burning;
I am standing like the candle: do not try to frighten me with fire.

Shiraz is the mine of ruby lips and the quarry of beauty;
I am a jeweller without a penny, and that is why I am distressed.

So many drunken eyes have I seen in this city
that, truly, I drink no wine now and still I am merry.

It is a city full of the glances of houris from all six directions;
I have nothing, or else I would be a buyer of all six.

If fortune helps me to carry my belongings towards the friend,
the tresses of the houris will brush the dust from my bedding.

Hafez, the bride of my nature longs to show herself;
I have no mirror, and that is why I sigh.

You are in love with beauty and you live in a place where there is beauty and opportunity on every side, yet your hands are empty, and that is what troubles you. Do not fear the hardships of love: you are ready for them. Your talent wants to be seen, but there is not yet a person or a place to reflect it. Look for that mirror, and try your luck at reaching the friend.
