Ghazal 341: If I gave any thought to the reproaches of the pretenders

If I gave any thought to the reproaches of the pretenders,
the way of drunkenness and of the rend would not prosper with me.

The asceticism of rends who are newly schooled leads nowhere;
I, who have a bad name with all the world, what virtue should I plan for?

Call me, who have no order in my affairs, the king of the crazed,
for in lack of wit I surpass the whole world.

Draw a mark on your brow with the blood of my heart,
so that they may know I am the sacrifice of you, who follow an infidel's creed.

Show a little faith and pass on, for God's sake,
so that you do not find out how far from a dervish I am in this cloak.

O wind, carry my blood-raining verse to that friend
who with black lashes has pricked the vein of my life.

Whether I drink wine or not, what have I to do with anyone?
I am the keeper of my own secret and the knower of my own moment.

Interpretation of the fal

Pay no attention to the reproaches of pretenders: if one went by what people say, no road would ever be travelled. You have chosen your way and are no longer chasing an outward good name. Be honest with yourself and do not present yourself as better than you are. Your affairs are your own: keep your secret and know the worth of your own time.
