Ghazal 349

Last night I said: "I will put the passion for his face out of my head."
He said: "Where is the chain, that I may deal with this madman?"

I called his stature a cypress, and he drew himself away from me in anger;
friends, my beloved takes offence at the truth: what am I to do?

I said something I had not weighed, O stealer of hearts; forgive me.
Grant me one coaxing glance, so that I may put my wits in measure.

I bear a pale face from that delicate temper, and I am without fault;
cupbearer, give me a cup, so that I may make my face rose-red.

O breeze from the dwelling of Layla, for God's sake, how long
shall I turn the encampment upside down and make a river of its ruins?

I, who have found the way to the treasure of the friend's endless beauty,
will from now on make a hundred beggars like myself as rich as Korah.

O moon, lord of the fortunate conjunction, remember your servant Hafez,
so that I may pray for the fortune of that beauty which grows day by day.

However hard you try to put this attachment out of your head, you cannot. The one you love is easily hurt and takes offence even at the truth: weigh your words with them, and if you have said something careless, apologise. Put an end to useless grieving. What you have found is a treasure that can benefit others too. Ask them not to forget you.
