Ghazal 351
God forbid that I should give up wine in the season of the rose;
I, who boast of good sense, when would I do such a thing?
Where is the minstrel, so that all I have earned from piety and learning
I may spend on the harp, the lute and the voice of the flute?
For the present my heart is weary of the talk and argument of the college;
for a while I will serve the beloved and wine instead.
When was there ever faithfulness in the times? Bring the cup of wine,
so that I may tell the tale of Jamshid and Kavus and Kay.
I do not fear the blackened record, for on the Day of Gathering,
by the bounty of His kindness, I will roll up a hundred such records.
Where is the courier of morning, so that I may make
my complaints of the night of separation to that one of blessed fortune and step?
This borrowed life which the Friend entrusted to Hafez,
one day I shall see His face and give it back to Him.
It is a time for joy, and standing aside from it is not wise. You have grown tired of dry study and debate: attend to your heart for a while. Do not count on the faithfulness of the times, for the great ones of the past have gone too. Do not be afraid of your past, and hope in God's forgiveness. The life you have is held in trust: keep it for the meeting with the Friend.
