Ghazal 352
For a long time now I have been serving in the tavern;
in the dress of poverty I do the work of people of fortune.
Until I bring into the snare of union a pheasant of graceful walk,
I lie in ambush and wait for the moment of opportunity.
Our preacher has never caught the scent of the truth; listen, for I say
these words in his presence too, and I do not speak behind his back.
Along with the east wind, stumbling and rising, I go towards the street of the friend,
and I ask my companions on the road for the help of their blessing.
The dust of your street cannot bear our troubling it any longer;
you have shown many kindnesses, O idol: I will lighten the burden.
The tress of the beloved is a snare on the road and his glance the arrow of calamity;
remember, O heart, how many times I give you this advice.
Cover the eye that sees ill, O generous One who covers faults,
from these boldnesses that I commit in the corner of my retreat.
I am a reciter of the Quran in one assembly and a drinker of dregs in another;
see this impudence, how I practise my craft upon the people.
For a long time you have been serving without pretension, doing great work behind a simple appearance. To reach your goal, lie in wait for the opportunity and do not hurry. What you have to say about others, say to their face and not behind their back. On a hard road, ask your companions for help. Do not impose on someone who has been kind to you. Avoid being two-faced.
