Ghazal 359

Happy the day when I leave this ruined halting place,
when I seek ease for my soul and go after the beloved.

Though I know that the stranger's road leads to nowhere,
I will go, following the scent of that scattered tress.

My heart is sick of the dread of Alexander's prison;
I will pack my belongings and go as far as the kingdom of Solomon.

Like the east wind, with a sick body and a heart without strength,
I will go, in devotion to that swaying cypress.

If on his road I must go on my head, like the pen,
I will go with a heart that bears its wounds and an eye that weeps.

I have vowed that if one day I come out of this grief,
I will go to the door of the tavern glad and singing ghazals.

In devotion to him, dancing like a mote in the light,
I will go as far as the edge of the spring of the shining sun.

Those who ride fast have no care for the state of the heavily laden;
O you who are devout, some help, that I may go gladly and with ease.

And if, like Hafez, I cannot find the way out of the desert,
I will go in the train of the vizier of the age.

It is time to leave a place that has left you heartsick and trapped: your heart longs for somewhere better and to be near those you love. Though the road is hard and unfamiliar, you have made up your mind. For all your weariness, love carries you forward. Ask good people for help and prayers, and if you cannot find the way alone, travel with someone able and knowledgeable. The end of this road is joy.
