Ghazal 360

If I go from this ruined halting place towards home,
then wherever I go from there I will go wise and prudent.

If from this journey I arrive safely in my homeland,
I have vowed to go straight from the road to the tavern.

To tell what was unveiled to me on this journeying of the Path,
I will go to the door of the cloister with lute and wine cup.

If those who know the road of love should drink my blood,
I am a nobody if I go to a stranger to complain.

After this, my hand and the beloved's tress like a chain:
how long, how long shall I go after the desire of my mad heart?

If I see again the curve of his eyebrow, like a prayer niche,
I will make a prostration of thanks and go to give thanks.

Happy the moment when, like Hafez, in devotion to the vizier,
I go merry from the tavern to my home with the friend.

If you return home from this hard place, you will be more experienced and wiser. A safe return lies ahead: keep the vow you made for it. Tell others what you learned on this journey. Do not take your complaints about those close to you to strangers. The end of this road is a glad return home in the company of the friend.
