Ghazal 361
The one who trampled me underfoot with cruelty, like the dust of the road,
I kiss the dust and ask pardon of his foot.
I am not one to cry out against your tyranny, God forbid;
I am a believing slave and a servant who wishes you well.
I have bound a long hope in the curl of your tresses;
may it never happen that my reaching hand is cut short.
I am a mote of dust, and in your street my place is pleasant;
I fear, O friend, that a wind will suddenly carry me away.
At dawn the elder of the tavern gave me the cup that sees the world,
and in that mirror he made me aware of your beauty.
I am a Sufi of the cloister of the holy world, and yet
for the present the temple of the Magians is where I have been sent.
Rise and come to the tavern with me, who sit by the roadside,
so that in that circle you may see what rank I hold.
You passed by drunk, and gave no thought to your Hafez;
alas, if my sigh should catch at the skirt of your beauty!
It pleased me that at dawn the monarch of the east was saying:
"For all my kingship, I am the slave of Turanshah."
Although you have had hard treatment from that person, you do not complain and remain loyal and humble. You have pinned a long hope on them and fear losing the pleasant place you have. Your present situation is temporary, and your true station is higher. Your worth is recognised among people of heart. Ask that person not to forget you.
