Ghazal 367

I have a ruling from the Magian elder, and it is an old saying,
that wine is unlawful in a place where the friend is not one's companion.

I will tear this cloak of hypocrisy: what else can I do?
For the spirit, the company of those not of its kind is a painful torment.

In the hope that the lip of the beloved may sprinkle a draught on me,
for years now I have been living at the door of the tavern.

Perhaps my long service has gone from his memory;
O breeze of dawn, remind him of the old covenant.

If after a hundred years you pass over my dust,
my rotted bones will raise their head from the clay, dancing.

The stealer of hearts first took our heart with a hundred hopes held out;
surely a generous nature does not forget its promise.

Tell the bud: "Do not be downcast that your affair is closed up tight,
for you will find help from the breath of morning and the sighs of the breeze."

O heart, look for your healing at another door;
the lover's pain is not made better by the physician's treatment.

Learn the jewel of true knowledge, which you can take with you,
for the store of gold and silver falls to the share of others.

The snare is strong, unless the kindness of God comes to help;
otherwise Adam gains no advantage over the accursed Satan.

Hafez, if you have no silver or gold, what of it? Be thankful;
what is better than the fortune of graceful speech and a sound nature?

No pleasure is sweet without a true companion: give up the company of those who are not your kind. You have waited for years: remind that person of your long service. Do not be downcast, for relief is on its way. Your cure lies not with the physician but with them. Gather knowledge and skill, which last, and be thankful for what you have.
