Ghazal 377

One night we will raise our hands and make a prayer,
and from somewhere find a remedy for the grief of separation from you.

My sick heart is slipping away: friends, some help,
so that we may bring a physician to its bedside and find a cure.

The one who took offence without cause, struck me with the sword and went,
bring him back, for God's sake, so that we may make our peace.

The root of joy has dried up; where is the road to the tavern,
so that in that water and air we may grow and thrive again?

Ask for help from the hearts of the rends, O heart, or else
the task is hard: may we not make a mistake.

The shadow of a bird of small spirit does nothing for anyone;
let us seek the fortunate shadow of a phoenix.

My heart has fallen out of tune; where is sweet-spoken Hafez,
so that with his songs and ghazals we may find a melody again?

Raise your hands in prayer for a remedy to this distance, and ask your friends for help. Someone has taken offence without cause and gone: try to bring them back and make peace. Your joy has dried up and you need fresh air. The task is hard: ask free-spirited, generous people for help, not the small-minded. Good words will put your heart back in tune.
