Ghazal 378
We do not speak ill, and we do not lean towards what is unjust;
we do not blacken anyone's garment, nor dye our own cloak blue.
To find fault with poor or rich, for having less or more, is bad;
the wise course is that we should do no evil at all.
We do not write the figure of sophistry in the book of knowledge;
we do not attach the secret of the Truth to the page of conjuring.
If the king does not drink the rends' draught with respect,
we will pay no attention to his clear, strained wine.
Let us ride pleasantly through the world in the sight of the wayfarers,
and give no thought to a black horse or a saddle worked with gold.
The sky breaks the ship of the masters of skill;
it is better that we do not lean on this suspended sea.
If an envious man spoke ill and a friend took offence,
tell him: "Be at ease, for we do not listen to a fool."
Hafez, if the enemy spoke falsely, we will not hold it against him;
and if he spoke the truth, we will not quarrel with a true word.
This fal calls you to cleanness in word and deed: do not speak ill, do not lean towards injustice, do not blacken anyone's name, and do not be two-faced yourself. Blame no one for their wealth or their lack of it. Do not set your heart on luxury and rank, and do not rely on luck. Do not listen to the envious: if what they say is false, forgive it, and if it is true, accept it.
