Ghazal 380
Many times I have said it, and I say it once more:
I, who have lost my heart, do not travel this road of my own accord.
Behind the mirror they have kept me like the parrot;
what the Master of pre-eternity told me to say, I say.
Whether I am thorn or rose, there is one who adorns the meadow,
and I grow by whatever hand it is that raises me.
Friends, do not blame me, heart-lost and bewildered as I am;
I have a jewel, and I am looking for someone with an eye for it.
Although rose-red wine is a fault for one who wears a patched cloak,
do not blame me, for with it I wash away the colour of hypocrisy.
The laughter and the weeping of lovers come from another place;
I sing in the night, and at the hour of dawn I lament.
Hafez said to me: "Do not breathe in the dust of the tavern door."
Tell him: "Do not find fault, for I am breathing the musk of Khotan."
The road you are on is not of your own choosing: what you say and do was taught to you from somewhere higher. Do not blame yourself for what you are, and do not be hurt by other people's blame either. You carry a jewel within you and must find someone who knows its worth. Your joy and your sorrow both come from the same source: accept that.
