Ghazal 384
I am burning from separation from you: turn your face away from cruelty.
Separation has become our calamity: O Lord, turn the calamity away.
The moon is showing itself off upon the grey-green steed of the sky;
so that it may be thrown headlong, set foot upon your own horse and ride.
Shake out your curls; that is, to spite the hyacinth,
carry incense round the meadow, as the east wind does.
To plunder reason and faith, walk out in your drunkenness;
tilt the cap on your head, and wrap your robe about your body.
O light of the eyes of the drunken, I am at the very height of waiting;
play the mournful harp, or else pass the cup around.
Time is writing a fair line upon his cheek;
O Lord, turn any evil writing away from our friend.
Hafez, your fortune from the fair of face amounts to no more than this;
if you are not content, turn back the decree of fate.
Distance has become a calamity for you: ask God to turn it away, and ask the friend to give up their severity. You are waiting, and any sign of them calms your heart. Pray for their good, that no harm may come to them. Your share of this love is just this much: if you are not content, you have no remedy but patience before what is decreed.
