Ghazal 388
Spring and the rose have become stirrers of joy and breakers of repentance;
in gladness at the face of the rose, pull the root of grief from your heart.
The east wind arrived, and the bud, in its devotion,
went out of itself and tore its shirt upon its own body.
Learn the way of sincerity from water, which is clear of heart;
for uprightness, seek freedom from the cypress of the meadow.
See the curls about the rose, ruffled by the hand of the east wind;
see the twist of the hyacinth's tresses upon the face of the jasmine.
The bride that is the bud has come from her chamber under a fortunate star;
truly she carries off heart and faith in the fairest way.
The whistle of the frenzied nightingale and the cry of the bulbul
have come out of the house of sorrow for the sake of union with the rose.
Tell the story of the company of the beautiful and of the cup of wine,
on the word of Hafez and the ruling of the elder who knows the art.
Spring and a time of joy have arrived: pull the root of grief out of your heart. Learn from nature: sincerity and purity from water, and freedom from the cypress. Your fortune is good, and something new and auspicious is on its way. Come out of the corner of sorrow and go to meet what you love.
