Ghazal 38

Without the sun of your face, no light is left in my day,
and of my life nothing is left but the darkest night.

At the hour of parting from you, I wept so much
that, far from your face, no light is left in my eyes.

Your image was leaving my eye and saying:
alas for this corner, which is left uninhabited.

Union with you used to keep death far from my head;
now, thanks to separation from you, it is far no longer.

The moment is near when your watchman will say:
far from your face, that weary sufferer is no more.

Patience is my remedy for separation from you, but
how can one be patient when the strength for it is gone?

If in separation from you my eyes run with water,
say: shed your liver's blood, for you have no excuse left.

Hafez, for grief, did not turn from weeping to laughter;
one in mourning has no desire left for the feast.

You are living through a hard separation and your days have grown dark. This fal speaks of patience: even though your strength is low, endurance is the only remedy for this distance. Now is not the time for new decisions or celebration. Share your grief with someone and let this night pass; light comes after it.
