Ghazal 393

It is I who am famous in the city for the practice of love;
it is I who have never stained my eye with seeing evil.

We keep faith, we bear the blame, and we are glad,
for on our Path to take offence is unbelief.

I said to the elder of the tavern: "What is the road to salvation?"
He called for a cup of wine and said: "To cover people's faults."

What does the heart desire from looking on the garden of the world?
To gather roses from your face with the hand of the pupil of the eye.

I drew my own image on water in the worship of wine for this:
that I might destroy the image of the worship of self.

I put my trust in the mercy of the tip of your tress; otherwise,
when there is no pull from that side, what use is striving?

From this assembly we will turn our reins towards the tavern,
for the sermon of those who do not practise must not be listened to.

Learn from the down of the friend how to love a fair face,
for it is pleasant to circle about the cheeks of the beautiful.

Kiss nothing but the lip of the cupbearer and the cup of wine, Hafez,
for it is a mistake to kiss the hands of the sellers of piety.

Your way is to love, to look with a clean eye and not to take offence: stay on it. The road to salvation is to cover other people's faults, not to seek them out. Put self-worship aside. Effort without a pull from the friend's side is of no use: hope in their kindness. Do not listen to advice from those who do not practise it themselves, and keep away from hypocrites.
