Ghazal 395

Make of the musk-dark hyacinth a veil for the rose petal;
that is, cover your face, and lay a world in ruins.

Shake the sweat from your face, and make the borders of the garden
full of rose-water, like the vials of our eyes.

The days of the rose, like life itself, have made haste to be gone;
cupbearer, make haste with the round of rose-red wine.

Open, in your own manner, that drunken narcissus heavy with sleep,
and out of envy put the eye of the graceful narcissus to sleep.

Breathe the scent of the violet and take hold of the beloved's tress;
look at the colour of the tulip and resolve on wine.

Since it is your custom and habit to slay your lovers,
drink the cup with our enemies and keep your reproaches for us.

Like the bubble, open your eye upon the face of the cup,
and judge the foundations of this house by the bubble.

Hafez seeks union by the way of prayer;
O Lord, answer the prayer of those whose hearts are weary.

The good days pass as quickly as life itself: do not delay, and make use of them. The foundations of this world are as frail as a bubble, so do not set your heart on it. The one you love is kinder to others than to you: do not take it to heart. Seek what you want by way of prayer: the prayer of the broken-hearted is answered.
