Ghazal 397

Come in through the door and light up our night chamber;
make fragrant the air of the gathering of the spiritual.

If the jurist advises you not to play at love,
hand him a cup and tell him to refresh his mind.

I have entrusted heart and soul to the eye and eyebrow of the beloved;
come, come, and look upon that arch and that view.

The star of the night of separation sheds no light;
come up to the roof of the palace and light the lamp of the moon.

Tell the keeper of paradise to carry the dust of this gathering
as a gift to heaven, and make of it aloe wood for the censer.

I am heartily weary of this cap and cloak;
with one glance turn me, who look like a Sufi, into a wandering dervish.

Since the beauties of the meadow are all subject to your beauty,
show your airs to the jasmine and your splendour to the pine.

The meddling self tells many a tale, cupbearer;
do not let go of your own work, and pour the wine into the cup.

The radiance of beauty has become a veil over the eye of understanding;
come, and light up the pavilion of the sun.

To covet the sweetness of union with you is beyond our measure;
refer me instead to that ruby lip like sugar.

Kiss the lip of the cup, and then hand it to the drunken;
with that fine touch refresh the minds of the companions.

After attending on pleasure and on love of the moon-faced,
of all the things you do, learn the verse of Hafez by heart.

You are looking for the arrival of someone whose presence lights up your home and your heart: invite them. Pay no attention to the advice of those who know nothing of love. You are tired of constraint and outward form and want to be free. Make your request smaller and more attainable. Do not listen to the whisperings of a restless mind, and carry on with your work. Take your share of good words as well.
