Ghazal 398
O light of my eyes, there is something to be said: listen.
Since your cup is full, give others to drink, and drink.
On the road of love the whisperings of the demon are many;
come forward and lend the ear of your heart to the message of the angel.
The means of music are spoilt and no instrument of joy is left;
O harp, raise your lament, and O tambourine, cry out.
The rosary and the cloak will not give you the taste of drunkenness;
in this work ask the wine seller for his blessing.
The old speak out of experience, as I have told you;
take heed, my son, so that you may grow old: listen to advice.
The hand of love has never laid its chain on a man in his senses;
if you want to draw the tress of the friend, give up your senses.
With friends there is no stinting of life or of wealth;
a hundred lives be the ransom of the friend who listens to counsel.
Cupbearer, may your cup never be empty of clear wine;
turn an eye of favour on me, who drink the dregs.
When you pass by, drunk, in your gold-scattering robe,
vow one kiss to Hafez in his garment of wool.
This fal is a friendly piece of advice: now that your hands are full, give and enjoy at the same time. There are many temptations on the road of love: listen to the true voice of the heart. Heed the advice of the experienced old. One cannot reach the friend by calculation. Do not grudge friends your life or your wealth, and ask the one who can give it for a little kindness.
