Ghazal 399
Give one coquettish glance and break the market of sorcery;
with a wink break the lustre and the fame of the Samaritan.
Throw to the wind the heads and turbans of a whole world; that is,
tilt the corner of your cap in the manner of the sovereign.
Tell your tress to give up the custom of stealing hearts;
tell your glance to break the centre of tyranny's army.
Step out gracefully and carry off the ball of beauty from everyone;
give the houri her due and break the splendour of the fairy.
With your gazelle eyes capture the lion of the sun;
with your two curved eyebrows break the bow of Jupiter.
When the tress of the hyacinth spreads perfume at the breath of the wind,
break its price with the tip of your amber tress.
When the nightingale sells its eloquence, Hafez,
break its worth by speaking in pure Persian.
You have an ability and a charm that surpass your rivals: do not hide them. Go forward with confidence and show what you can do. The tricks and pretences of others fade before what is real in you. With all your power, refrain from harshness and from hurting hearts. The time has come to show yourself in the right way.
