Ghazal 3

If that Turk of Shiraz would take my heart in hand,
for the dark mole on her cheek I would give Samarkand and Bukhara.

Pour, cupbearer, the last of the wine, for in paradise you will not find
the banks of the Roknabad stream nor the rose walks of Mosalla.

Alas! These bold gypsies, sweet of craft, who set the town in uproar,
have carried patience from my heart as Turks carry off a feast of plunder.

The beloved's beauty has no need of our imperfect love;
what need has a lovely face of paint and powder, mole and line?

From that beauty of Joseph, growing day by day, I understood
that love would draw Zuleikha out from behind the veil of chastity.

Whether you revile me or curse me, I will pray for you;
a bitter answer suits the ruby lip that tastes of sugar.

Listen to counsel, my dear, for more than their own souls
fortunate youths hold dear the advice of a wise elder.

Speak of the minstrel and of wine, and seek less the secret of time,
for no one has solved, or will solve, this riddle by reason.

You have sung a ghazal and pierced pearls; come, Hafez, and recite sweetly,
for on your verse the heavens scatter the necklace of the Pleiades.

Your heart is given to someone or something for which you would trade everything you own. Value today and the pleasures within reach, and do not spend your life on riddles that cannot be solved. Do not be hurt by a harsh word, and listen to the advice of someone older and wiser. Your talent is real and will soon be recognised.
