Ghazal 400
My tall, coquettish, artful beloved
has cut short the long tale of my asceticism.
Did you see, heart, what at the end of old age, piety and learning
my eye, which plays at love, has done to me?
I fear for the ruin of my faith, for
the prayer niche of your eyebrow carries off my presence at prayer.
I said: with the cloak of hypocrisy I will cover the sign of love;
the tear was a tell-tale and made my secret plain.
The friend is drunk and does not remember the companions;
blessed be the memory of my cupbearer, who is kind to the poor.
O Lord, when will that east wind blow, by whose breeze
the fragrance of his generosity will set my affairs right?
With my weeping I am painting a picture on water for now;
when will my figure of speech be joined to reality?
Like the candle I weep over myself while laughing,
to see what my burning and enduring will do to you, heart of stone.
Ascetic, since nothing comes of your prayer,
there is still my drunkenness at night, my secrets and my pleading.
Hafez has burnt with weeping; east wind, tell his state
to my king, who cherishes friends and melts enemies.
A sudden love has upset all your restraint and your plans. You have tried to hide it, but your state has given your secret away. For now your efforts seem to bring nothing, yet patience and prayer in the night will have their effect. Ask help of a person of standing who cares for friends: the knot will be untied by them.
