Ghazal 403

Drink ruby wine and look at the faces of the moon-browed;
against the creed of those others, look at the beauty of these.

Under their patched cloaks they carry lassos;
look at the long reach of these men of short sleeves.

They do not bow their heads to the harvest of both worlds;
look at the pride and the airs of beggars and gleaners.

For half a glance they ask a thousand lives;
look at the need of the people of heart and the disdain of the delicate.

He threw the rights of our companionship to the wind and went;
look at the faithfulness of friends and companions.

To become the captive of love is my way to freedom;
look at the far-seeing mind of those who look ahead.

The company of the friend took the cloud from the heart of Hafez;
look at the pure aspiration of the pure and the pure in faith.

Do not be taken in by the appearance of the pious: some have set snares under the garment of simplicity. True dervishes, by contrast, need nothing and hold their heads high. You are hurt by a friend who did not keep the rights of companionship, but take it as a lesson. Giving your heart to a true love frees you from other bonds. The company of the pure clears the dust from the heart.
