Ghazal 411

Your musk-scattering forelock makes the violet writhe;
your heart-opening laugh tears the veil of the bud.

O my sweet-scented rose, do not burn your own nightingale,
for in all sincerity it prays for you the whole night long.

I, who used to grow weary of the breath of angels,
endure the chatter of a whole world for your sake.

See the fortune of love: how, out of poverty and pride,
your beggar tilts the corner of the crown of sovereignty.

Though the cloak of piety and the cup of wine do not suit each other,
I paint all these pictures in order to please you.

The frenzy of the wine of your love will leave my head at that moment
when this head full of desire becomes the dust at the door of your house.

The royal seat of my eye is the resting place of your image;
it is a place of prayer, my king: may your place never be without you.

Your cheek is a pleasant meadow, above all since, in the spring of beauty,
the sweet-spoken Hafez has become your singing bird.

Your love is so deep that for its sake you put up with any talk and reproach. Ask the one you love to be kinder to you, since you sincerely wish them well. This love gives you dignity and freedom from need. Everything you do is to please them: do not hide that. Your heart will remain their place.
