Ghazal 413: The line of down on the friend's cheek, which eclipses the moon
The line of down on the friend's cheek, which eclipses the moon,
is a pleasant ring, but there is no way out of it.
The eyebrow of the friend is the corner of the prayer niche of fortune;
rub your face there and ask him for what you need.
O you who drink at the gathering of Jamshid, keep your breast clean,
for the world-seeing cup is a mirror: beware of sighing on it.
The conduct of the people of the cloister made me a worshipper of wine;
see this smoke, by which my record has turned black.
Tell the sultan of grief to do whatever he can;
I have taken refuge from him with the sellers of wine.
Cupbearer, hold the lamp of wine in the path of the sun;
tell it to light the torch of morning from it.
Sprinkle some water on the daybook of our deeds;
perhaps the letters of sin can be washed away by it.
Hafez, who tuned the instrument of the minstrel of lovers:
may the floor of this banqueting place never be empty of him.
In this fancy that the beggar of the city entertains,
will there be a day when the king remembers him?
Interpretation of the fal
You are caught in an attachment that has no way out, though it is pleasant. Ask humbly for what you need from the very person you have given your heart to. Keep the heart clean, for even a little cloud dims the mirror. The two-facedness of others has disillusioned you, and you have found a refuge from grief. You hope that someone of high standing will remember you: that hope is not misplaced.
