Ghazal 415
O messenger of the truthful, tell us news of our friend;
tell the nightingale, the singer of melodies, how the rose is.
We are the confidants of the retreat of intimacy: do not be troubled;
to a friend who is close, speak words that are close.
When he tossed the tips of those two musk-raining tresses,
what did he have in mind for us? For God's sake, tell.
Whoever said, "The dust of the friend's door is salve for the eyes,"
tell him: "Prove that saying plainly on our own eyes."
The one who would forbid us the tavern,
tell him: "Say that again in the presence of my elder."
If you should pass once more by that door of fortune,
after paying your respects and offering a prayer, say:
"Bad as we are, do not hold it against us;
speak of the beggar's sin as a king would."
Read to this poor man the letter of that great one;
tell this beggar the story of that king.
When he shook souls to the ground out of the snare of his tress,
what happened to that stranger of ours? East wind, tell.
The story of those who have knowledge nourishes the soul;
go and ask for a hint, then come and tell a tale.
Hafez, if they give you entry to his gathering,
drink wine, and for God's sake give up pretence.
You are waiting for news of someone who is far away: news of them will come. Entrust your message to a reliable go-between and ask that your faults be viewed generously. Give no weight to the claims of those who do not practise what they say. Ask people of knowledge and experience, and learn. If you gain entry where you wish, be without pretence and be yourself.
