Ghazal 41
Though wine gives joy and the wind sifts roses,
do not drink to the sound of the harp, for the morals officer is sharp.
If a flask and a companion should fall into your hands,
drink with good sense, for the times are full of trouble.
Hide the cup in the sleeve of your patched cloak,
for like the eye of the flask, the age sheds blood.
Let us wash the wine from our cloaks with tears,
for it is the season of piety and the time of abstinence.
Do not look for sweet living from the upside-down turning of the sky,
for the clear wine at the top of this jar is all mixed with dregs.
The raised sky is a sieve that scatters blood,
whose droppings are the head of Khosrow and the crown of Parviz.
You have taken Iraq and Fars with your sweet verse, Hafez;
come, for it is the turn of Baghdad and the time of Tabriz.
These are unsettled times and you need to move carefully. Do not display your pleasures or your plans, and keep your secret to yourself. This is a season for restraint and patience, not for showing off. Do not expect unmixed happiness from the world. Even so, your talent will make its way and your reputation will spread further.
