Ghazal 420
ناگهان پرده برانداخته‌ای، یعنی چه؟
مست از خانه برون تاخته‌ای، یعنی چه؟
زلف در دست صبا، گوش به فرمان رقیب
این چنین با همه درساخته‌ای، یعنی چه؟
شاه خوبانی و منظور گدایان شده‌ای
قدر این مرتبه نشناخته‌ای، یعنی چه؟
نه سر زلف خود اول تو به دستم دادی
بازم از پای درانداخته‌ای، یعنی چه؟
سخنت رمز دهان گفت و کمر سر میان
وز میان، تیغ به ما آخته‌ای، یعنی چه؟
هر کس از مهرهٔ مهر تو به نقشی مشغول
عاقبت با همه کج باخته‌ای، یعنی چه؟
حافظا در دل تنگت چو فرود آمد یار
خانه از غیر نپرداخته‌ای، یعنی چه؟
Suddenly you have thrown off the veil: what does it mean?
Drunk, you have rushed out of the house: what does it mean?
Your tress in the hand of the east wind, your ear at the command of the rival:
you have come to terms with everyone like this: what does it mean?
You are the king of the beautiful, and you have become what beggars gaze at;
you have not known the worth of your rank: what does it mean?
Was it not you who first put the tip of your tress in my hand?
And then you have thrown me down again: what does it mean?
Your words hinted at the mouth, and your belt at the secret of the waist;
and from the waist you have drawn a sword on us: what does it mean?
Each one is busy with a throw of the dice of your love;
in the end you have played false with all of them: what does it mean?
Hafez, when the friend came down into your narrow heart,
you did not clear the house of others: what does it mean?
The behaviour of the one you love has suddenly changed and left you bewildered. They have grown familiar with everyone and have not kept their own worth or yours. First they gave you hope and then discouraged you: ask them plainly and openly. Look at yourself as well: if you want love to settle in your heart, empty it of other preoccupations.
