Ghazal 424

Do not part from me, for you are the light of my eyes,
the rest of my soul and the companion of my startled heart.

Lovers do not take their hands from your skirt;
you have torn the shirt of their patience.

May no harm come to you from the eye of your own fortune,
for in winning hearts you have reached the height of beauty.

Do not forbid me to love him, O mufti of the age;
I hold you excused, for you have not seen him.

That reproach which the friend made you, Hafez:
perhaps you had stretched your feet beyond your own blanket.

You are worried about being parted from someone who is the peace of your soul: tell them so honestly. Those who try to keep you from this love do not know your state. If you have met with coldness or reproach from them, consider whether you have gone beyond your measure. With humility and respect for your own limits, this bond will last.
