Ghazal 432
I am languishing from the cup of love: cupbearer, give me wine;
fill the goblet, for without wine the gathering has no lustre.
The description of his moon-like face will not come right in any mode;
minstrel, strike up a tune; cupbearer, give me wine.
My body has bent into a ring, so that from now on your guardian
may not drive us from this door on any pretext.
Waiting for your face, we have only hopefulness;
deluded with union with you, we have only fancy and dream.
I am languishing for those two eyes: where is there a cup?
I am sick for those two ruby lips: at the least, an answer.
Hafez, why do you set your heart on the fancy of the beautiful?
When was a thirsty man ever satisfied by the gleam of a mirage?
You are homesick and restless, and want something to lift your mood. For a long time you have lived on hope and fancy without receiving an answer. You have the right to ask at least for a clear reply. But be alert: setting your heart on a fancy is like trying to quench thirst at a mirage. See whether this hope has a real foundation or not.
