Ghazal 436

If that one with the musk-scented down had written us a letter,
the sky would not have rolled up the page of our existence.

Although separation brings forth the fruit of union,
O farmer of the world, would that you had never sown that seed.

Forgiveness is paid in ready coin to the one who has here
a friend like a houri and a house like paradise.

On the bench of love one cannot live in comfort;
since there is no golden cushion, let us make do with a brick.

Do not sell, for the garden of Iram and the pride of Shaddad,
one flask of wine, a sweet-lipped friend and the edge of a field.

How long this grief over the base world, O knowing heart?
It is a pity for beauty to fall in love with ugliness.

The staining of the cloak is the ruin of the world;
where is a wayfarer, a man of heart, one of pure nature?

Why did Hafez let the tip of your tress slip from his hand?
So it was decreed; what could he have done but let it go?

If news had come from them you would be far better: separation is hard, though it ends well. Be content with what you have: a good friend, a quiet home and simple pleasures are better than any splendour. Do not give a knowing heart over to grief for a base world. Do not blame yourself for what has been lost: so it was decreed.
